Peritoneal Dialysis Training
Learn to perform dialysis at home with confidence and independence
What is Peritoneal Dialysis Training?
What Is Peritoneal Dialysis?
Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a home-based kidney replacement therapy that uses the lining of your abdomen (the peritoneum) as a natural filter. A sterile cleansing solution is introduced into your abdominal cavity through a catheter, absorbs waste products and excess fluid, and is then drained out.
At Avitus, our PD training program equips patients and their caregivers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to perform exchanges safely at home. Our team provides ongoing support even after you complete training.
How It Works
Our PD Training Program
- Initial Assessment: Your nephrologist evaluates whether PD is suitable for your condition, considering your medical history, home environment, and lifestyle.
- Catheter Placement: A small, flexible catheter is surgically placed in your abdomen. You will have a healing period before training begins.
- Hands-On Training: Over 1 to 2 weeks, our PD nurse specialist teaches you (and your caregiver) the full exchange procedure — from hand hygiene to connecting supplies to draining fluid.
- Home Setup: We help ensure your home environment is clean and suitable for performing exchanges safely.
- Ongoing Follow-Up: Regular clinic visits, phone support, and home assessments to monitor your progress and address any concerns.
